Jatoba is an umbrella tree, which can grow up to 30 m in height, and is typical of the rainforest and some tropical areas of Central America.

Many species of Hymenaea including Jatoba, produce Copal resins usable. At the base of the Jatoba collects resin rubbery and sticky, usually underground. The resin of trees of this kind becomes amber through a chemical process milllenario.

The chemical analysis of Jatoba has shown that this tree is rich in biologically active compounds, including diterpeni, sesquiterpeni, flavonoids, and oligosaccharides.
